Research and Innovation Center Hybrid Artificial Intelligence

The Fraunhofer research and innovation center, Hybrid Artificial Intelligence, is a partnership between Fraunhofer IAIS (Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems) and Fraunhofer IAO (Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering). It researches and develops hybrid AI technologies that combine machine learning, real-world knowledge, and logical conclusions. For example, the human ability to understand meanings correctly from context is emulated. This makes AI systems more robust and their decisions more comprehensible.

Among other things, Hybrid AI plays an important role in the development of intelligent agents who work autonomously to fulfil predetermined tasks. They can communicate with people and learn from their interactions. They are equipped with an individual memory and use generative AI models, as well as sensor and actuator tools and further capabilities like programming, calculation, or logical reasoning.

These agents can be deployed in increasingly more demanding contexts. By working closely with companies in the Heilbronn region and further afield, we are assessing the practical feasibility of the results of our research and are promoting the direct translation of technologies into practical use.

Key topics:

  • Hybrid AI: The combination of data-based machine learning, real-world knowledge, and logical conclusions for transparent and reproducible AI models.
  • Intelligent agents: Development of intelligent agents that work autonomously, communicate with people, and can learn from interactions.
  • Generative AI: Development and implementation of large language models, as well as its adaption to domain specific contexts.
  • Self learning systems: Research and development of self-learning systems for demanding contexts of application, supported by Open Source models and technologies.
  • Responsible design and efficiency: Ensuring the reliability, performance, and responsible design of AI systems for efficient commissioning and operation.
